Privacy policy

LibreChat and your data

Last updated 22 October 2026

In short: LibreChat has no servers and no accounts. Messages travel between phones over Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Aware, private ones end-to-end encrypted, and everything is stored encrypted on your phone.

What LibreChat collects

Nothing. There is no server, account, analytics or advertising. The developer never receives any of your data.

Your identity

Your phone creates its own keys. Your name and public keys are announced to phones nearby so they can reach you and verify messages are from you.

Messages

On your phone

Messages, contacts and media are stored in an encrypted database, with keys protected by Android’s keystore. An optional app lock asks for your fingerprint, face or screen lock.

Permissions

What LibreChat asks Android for, and why:

PermissionWhy
Bluetooth (scan, advertise, connect)To find nearby phones and pass messages between them.
Location (Android 11 and older)Android requires it there for Bluetooth scanning. LibreChat never reads your location.
Nearby Wi-Fi devicesFor Wi-Fi Aware, which moves photos and voice notes quickly between phones side by side.
InternetAndroid requires it to open the local Wi-Fi Aware link. LibreChat never contacts a server.
Microphone & cameraTo record voice notes, take photos and scan verification codes — only when you use them.
Notifications, run at startTo tell you about new messages and keep the mesh running in the background.
BiometricsOnly for the optional app lock.

Children

LibreChat isn't aimed at children and collects nothing from anyone.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version is published here and in the app's source repository, where every change can be seen.
